I came across this article (http://www.northwestern.edu/newscenter/stories/2016/03/political-insight-republicans-democrats-conservatives-liberals-think-differently.html) that argues that liberals and conservative more than just have different sets of beliefs, they are actually thought to think completely differently from each other. They solve problems, look at situations, and act in almost entirely different ways supposedly, which led me to some thoughts on the conservative and liberal mindset while reading "Ideology: Its Resurgence in Social, Personality, and Political Psychology." The authors mentioned that the core differences in liberal and conservative mindsets came down to things such as "resistance to change" or the "acceptance of inequality" and whether or not the liberal/conservative mind believes in one side or the other. Overall the diagrams and experiments boiled it down the following as differences in their mindsets:
- Flexibility vs stability
- Progress vs tradition
- Chaos vs order
- Rebellion vs conformation
- Willingness to accept inequality
I started thinking about how these might be reflected in simple tasks throughout our day, such as driving to work, pouring a glass of juice, watching television...etc. I'm curious to see if anybody has any insights as to how might someone who is relatively liberal vs relatively conservative might think differently in simple every day situations.
Discussion:
Are these characteristics apparent in more than just our political beliefs and reflected in our everyday lives/personalities as well? Can you think of any examples of everyday occurrences that are reflective of the liberal versus conservative mindset? How might someone who is more liberal or more conservative act in more complicated situations (situations of danger, challenge, uncertainty...etc.)? Also how do we know if one set of beliefs or way of acting is actually superior to the other?
